TEACHER - Breathe Behavioral Health Continuum

Pay Plan: T   Grade: K-5 Months: 183 days per PEA contract 

Dept: Portland Schools

Reports to: Director of Specialized Programs  and School Principal

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Under direction of the Director of Specialized Programs and the School Principal, the Breathe Special Education Teacher plans, and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with behavioral disabilities. They will providea a climate and an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community. Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.


  • Plans special education academic intervention plans that, as much as possible, meets the needs, interests and abilities of individuals to ensure success for every student.

  • Serves as the special education case manager for the students served on their caseload. 

  • On a regular and consistent basis, meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.

  • Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.

  • Provides instructional programming to meet the needs of all students including students with disabilities.

  • Prepares for classes assigned, and shows evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.

  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.

  • Establishes learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, requirements of PPS curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development.

  • Plans for and utilizes instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.

  • Takes all necessary and safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, PPS policy and administrative regulation.

  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, follows programming assigned expected behaviors, procedures, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.

  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.

  • Establishes relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.

  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for instructional assistants, teacher assistants, and volunteers. May evaluate assistant’s job performance with department heads and/or administrators.

  • Appraises their own effectiveness and demonstrates successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.

  • Participates in school management and shares responsibility for the total school program.

  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required. Performs related work as required.



  • Knowledge of PPS curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, PPS policies, and effective instructional practices.

  • Understanding of the teaching/learning process for students with disabilities.

  • Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.

  • Ability to infuse technology into curriculum.

  • Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community.

  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.

  • Willingness to reflect on personal implicit bias and a commitment to challenging personal perspectives and deepening self-awareness.

  • Knowledge of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).

  • Preferred qualifications: experience working with behavioral disabilities.


  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field of special education from an accredited college or university.

  • Combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, will determine salary.

  • Experience implementing positive behavioral interventions and supports.

  • Certified in CPI or able to be certified. 



  • Meets Maine state certification requirements 282 - Teachers of Students with disabilities. 



  • Light physical effort may be required



  • Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as needed.

    The Portland Public Schools gives parents an array of program choices. The district as one of the first in the country to offer project-based Expeditionary Learning from kindergarten through 12th grade.

    High school students have access to one of the broadest selections of Advanced Placement courses in Maine. Qualified high school students may take up to two college courses with tuition paid by the state. A regional arts and technology high school provides hands-on courses in growth fields such as health care, robotics and “green” construction.

    More than 60 languages are spoken by students attending the Portland Public Schools. Multilingual students represent about a quarter of the district’s enrollment. The district’s diversity prepares all students for their roles as world citizens.
